Christmas Owls: One-Class Research Activities & Read-aloud Lesson

$5.00

This holiday-themed activity goes along with a read-aloud about Rockefeller (or Rocky) the owl. Rocky was found in the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in 2020, and her rehabilitation and release inspired several picture books

Grade Levels:
Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, and 3rd Grade

Teaching Duration:
1 class period

One-Class Research activities are a no-pressure way for young elementary students to explore and begin using the library’s online resources. After listening to the book, students learn more about owls using Pebble Go, World Book Kids, Britannica Kids (free or paid version), or the National Geographic Kids website.

This is not a complete research unit; it’s a very first introduction and exploration for kindergarten through 3rd grade students to the library resources. Keywords to type in the search bar are provided and pre-researched, so students are guaranteed to find what they are looking for.

Please note: This activity is a secular Christmas activity. There is no mention of religious celebrations or traditions, and there are no other December holidays discussed.

Recommended books: “The Christmas Owl” by Ellen Kalish and Gideon Sterer, or
“The Little Owl and the Big Tree” by Jonah and Jeannette Winters are high-quality picture books to read aloud with this lesson.
