New teacher-librarians need mentoring, just like a classroom teacher and even if they have teaching experience.

Mentoring programs increase teacher retention, and this mentoring package is specifically for the back-to-school season, when routines and expectations are being set for the rest of the school year. With a strong start to the year, you can stay out of overwhelm and make the rest of your school year run smoother.

Five (5) Hours of Mentoring and/or Coaching:

  • Takes place in the first two months of your school year
    • For most U.S. schools, this would mean scheduling our mentoring sessions between August and October.
  • Weekly sessions are encouraged to get the most benefit from your mentoring experience.
  • Time can be rolled over into other months
  • You choose what we work on together. Some ideas might include:
    • Planning lessons,
    • Organizing your space,
    • Implementing a library class routine,
    • Starting a new program,
    • Collection development (weeding, inventory, responding to book challenges),
    • Fundraising, and
    • Anything else related to the school library field.

Each mentoring session includes a Session Notes Google Doc that summarizes our discussions and links to resources you can use

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should Collette be my mentor?
Great question! Here are some facts about my credentials, experience, and why I know what I’m talking about:

  1. I’ve been an elementary school librarian for 15 years, up until 2022. I’m certified in Library Science and Elementary Education (K-6) in the state of Pennsylvania.
  2. No matter what your schedule looks like, I’ve probably taught on a similar schedule: fixed, flexible, blocked, or any other combination.
  3. I taught through the pandemic via online, in-person, and hybrid learning models. I’ve dealt with the student behaviors and social-emotional needs all along the way.
  4. Throughout my career, I continually innovated and improved my teaching and library space. I know there are many ways that work, and more importantly, how to figure out if something will work for you.
  5. I was co-chair of my library department for 6 years, which means I managed and oversaw the budget for 8 school libraries serving kindergarten through 12th grade. I know my way around a purchase order!

How can I get my district to pay for mentoring?
I firmly believe that educator mentoring is something your school or district should provide, and I’m happy to work with your business office to make that happen.

First, get a purchase order (PO) quote at this link: https://forms.gle/YxsJsTxmWAMY9S5w8
Next, get it approved by the powers that be in your school.
Finally, send the approved PO to me (usually done by the person who does the approving).

We’ll start our sessions as soon as I receive the approved PO. I’ll take it from there, and send an invoice for your school or district to pay.

Why is my district PO quote higher than the price on this page?
The price you see on this page reflects the “self-pay” option for teacher-librarians, which I deeply discount so that more teacher-librarians can afford mentoring. Directly paying me saves money for both you and me.

Quite simply, it costs time and money to work with the school district PO process. Districts usually don’t pay for products and services upfront. They often pay after receiving the items, or after services begin. The purchase order quote reflects those extra costs.
