Mentoring programs increase teacher retention, and new teacher-librarians need mentoring just like a newly-hired classroom teacher, even if they have prior teaching experience.
Twelve (12) Hours of Mentoring and/or Coaching:
- Suggested schedule for the best experience:
- Four (4) one-hour sessions during the first two months of the school year, usually August and September. Weekly sessions are encouraged.
- One (1) one-hour sessions per month beginning in October and continuing through May
- Unused time during a month is “rolled over” to use in future months.
- The librarian chooses what we work on together, with optional input from the school principal or district. Some topics might include:
- Planning lessons,
- Organizing your space,
- Implementing a library class routine,
- Starting a new program,
- Collection development (weeding, inventory, responding to book challenges),
- Fundraising, and
- Anything else related to the school library field.
Each mentoring session includes a Session Notes Google Doc that summarizes our discussions and links to resources you can use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should Collette mentor the librarian at my school?
Great question! Here are my credentials, experience, and why I know what I’m talking about:
- I’ve been an elementary school librarian for 15 years, up until 2022. I’m certified in Library Science and Elementary Education (K-6) in the state of Pennsylvania.
- No matter what your schedule looks like, I’ve probably taught on a similar schedule: fixed, flexible, blocked, or any other combination.
- I taught through the pandemic via online, in-person, and hybrid learning models. I’ve dealt with the student behaviors and social-emotional needs all along the way.
- Throughout my career, I continually innovated and improved my teaching and library space. I know there are many ways that work, and more importantly, how to figure out if something will work for you.
- I was co-chair of my library department for 6 years, which means I managed and oversaw the budget for 8 school libraries serving kindergarten through 12th grade. I know my way around a purchase order!

How can my district to book this mentoring package for the school librarian?
I firmly believe that educator mentoring is something your school or district should provide, and I’m happy to work with your business office to make that happen.
First, get a purchase order (P.O.) quote at this link: https://forms.gle/YxsJsTxmWAMY9S5w8
Next, get it approved by the administrator or business office at your school or district.
Finally, send the approved P.O. to me (usually done by the person who does the approving).
We’ll start our sessions as soon as I receive the approved P.O. I’ll take it from there, and send an invoice for your school or district to pay.

Tiffany W Clark –
Working with Collette during my first year as an elementary school librarian was an invaluable experience. As a seasoned elementary librarian consultant, she mentored me monthly and consistently provided thoughtful, practical guidance that helped me grow into my role with confidence. Her knowledge of curriculum, classroom management, library stations, lesson ideas and library programming was exceptional. For every question I brought to our meetings, Collette always provided me with resources, ideas and suggestions. Her follow-up notes were always helpful for me to refer back to and always included useful links as well as advice.
Collette is so down to earth, and minutes into our first meeting I was comfortable and sure that she knew her stuff. Collette consistently impressed me with the breadth of her expertise and the relevance of her advice. Whether I needed help troubleshooting Follett, planning a book fair, organizing inventory, making thoughtful weeding decisions or understanding the Danielson Framework and evaluation process for pre-tenure faculty, she provided clear, on-point guidance. Collette understands the unique nuances of working with our youngest learners and helped me navigate everything from daily routines to the bigger picture of building a successful elementary library program.
I am incredibly grateful for the support and mentorship she provided throughout my first year as an elementary librarian. Her encouragement, knowledge and willingness to share her experience gave me the reassurance I needed to keep learning, problem-solving and moving forward with confidence. I would highly recommend her to any new or experienced elementary librarian looking for an exceptionally knowledgeable, supportive and insightful mentor.
